A new method of studying the emission lines of prominences is found, based on the use of triplet lines. The main results of its application for an investigation of the green triplet lines of magnesium and the H/sub 10/, H/sub 11/, and H/sub 12/ Balmer lines in a quiescent prominence of October 15, 1960, are presented. It is established that the source function is not constant within these lines but varies, which indicates a difference between the profiles of the coefficients of emission and absorption under the conditions of the solar atmosphere. The total optical depth of the prominence for the magnesium and hydrogen lines is determined. For the hydrogen lines the source function grows by 35% from the middle to the periphery of the prominence.
