The kinetics of urauium trioxide reduction by hydrogen at temperatures from 350 to 500 deg C and hydrogen pressures of 50 to 400 mm Hg were studied in a vacuum apparatus with continuous control. The reduction, plotted as a function of time at various temperatures and P/sub H2/, proceeds at a constant rate. At constant temperature the activation energy is 20.8 kcal/mol. The final compositions preduced at various temperatures show that the reduction never reaches UO/sub 2.0/, and only at 500 deg C reaches U/sub 4/O/sub 9/. The reduction begins at 350 deg C, hence the postulation on preliminary dissociation of UO/sub 3/ in the reduction process does not hold. The plotted curves indicate UO/sub 3/ reduction to U/sub 3/O/sub 3/ by a surface reaction between hydrogen, adsorbed on the surface of the oxide, and the oxygen of the oxide. Other curves show the rate of reduction UO/sub 2x6//sub i/sub x/. The total reduction ra te is proportional to hydrogen pressure. (R.V.J.)
