The kinetics of uranium trioxide reduction by carbon monoxide at 260 to 400 deg C and 15 to 400 mm pressure indicate a reduction from UO/sub 3/ to UO/sub 2.9//sub 2/ at a rate independent of oxygen elimination. From UO/sub 2.9//sub 2/ to UO/sub 2.2//sub 5/ the reduction proceeds autocatalytically, and from UO/sub 2.2//sub 5/ to UO/sub 2/ lD a new rate constant prevails. From UO/sub 2.2//sub 5/ to UO/sub 2/ the reduction rate decreases with the reduction. The activation energy of the trioxide process is 30.7 kcal/mol; for UO/sub 2.5//sub 5/ to UO/sub 2.2//sub 5/, 24.3 kcal/mol. The surface reaction between adsorbed carbon monoxide and oxygen is the determining stage. From UO/sub 2.2//sub 5/ to UO/sub 2/ the reduction is accomplished by diffusion, and oxygen diffusion in the solid phase is the limiting factor. (R.V.J.)
