DIFFUSION OF CHARGED PARTICLES OF DECAYING PLASMA IN A MAGNETIC FIELD (in Russian)

Decay of a weakly ionized plasma in a dielectric cylinder with a magnetic field distributed along the axis was studied using 0.4- to 7-cm diameter cylinders, 0.05 to 1.5 mm Hg helium pressures, and magnetic fields up to 6000 gauss. A super-high frequency resonator method was used for measuring charged particle concentrations in plasma decay. It was found that plasma decay obeys diffusion theory in 4- to 7-cm diameter, 70- to 80-cm cylinders. In 0.4- to 2-cm diameter cylinders the decay process is considerably faster than is predicted by diffusion theory as a result of particle collisions. (R.V.J.)
