Description of the Fabrication of a Geiger-Muller Counter with Window; DESCRIPCION DE LA FABRICACION DE UN CONTADOR GEIGER-MULLER CON VENTANA
The components used in the fabrication of GeigerMueller counters and the method of fabrication for the counter are described. The insiallation and filling of the counters are also discussed. The materials that can be used and the precautions which must be adopted in order to obtain counters with uniform operation and good characietistics are described. The couriers discussed are of brass with thin windows of mica or aluminum and operate at 1100 v with a slope less than 5%/100 v. (tr-auth) -
Carbothermic Synthesis of ~820- m UN Kernels. Investigation of Process Variables
This report details the continued investigation of process variables involved in converting sol-gel-derived, urainia-carbon microspheres to ~820-μm-dia. UN fuel kernels in flow-through, vertical refractory-metal crucibles at temperatures up to 2123 K. Experiments included calcining of air-dried UO 3-H 2O-C microspheres in Ar and H 2-containing gases, conversion of the resulting UO 2-C kernels to dense UO 2:2UC in the same gases and vacuum, and its conversion in N 2 to in UC 1-xN x. Synthesis of UN coatings on uranium. [Mg/sub 3/N/sub 2/ + 2U. -->. 2UN + 3Mg]
A single-displacement reaction approach was used to form uranium mononitride as a protective coating for uranium; the source of the nitrogen was a solid nitride, and magnesium nitride was chosen as the most attractive candidate for the experiment. While the goal of synthesizing a single-phase uranium mononitride coating at temperatures lower than 1405 K was met, a number of problems inherent in the process were identified. 6 figures, 2 tables.
