PULSE SHORTENING EFFECT IN LINEAR ACCELERATORS
The injection current into an electron linear accelerator has a threshold beyond which the emerging accelerated beam is unstable in the latter part of the pulses, resulting in partial or complete loss of the output current. An experiment and a theoretical analysis show that the effect is due to r-f excitation of the accelerator in an unwanted mode. Several ways to suppress the excitution are discussed. (auth)
