METHOD FOR DETECTING FISSION PRODUCT ESCAPES IN A NUCLEAR REACTOR

A method for detecting fission product escapes due to burst fuel elements in a nuclear reactor or due to burst sealed fuel samples in an experimental loop of the reactor consists of separating a sample from the cooling fluid in contact with the mentioned sources of fission product escapes and measuring the beta activity or the sample in the range of 1.5 to 6 Mev. Such a measurement alloys the fission product activity to be distinguished from the activity of the cooling fluid, so that, e.g., the presence of fission products is evident if after ten minutes the activity is slowed to at least half.
