A photometric determination of cerium was examined by the utilization of the reaction between methylene blue and cerium(IV). Cerium(IV) reacts with methylene blue in a weakly alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide, and an extraction of this mixture with benzene gives a reddish violet coloration. Absorption maximum of this colored solution lies at 510 m mu , and the amount of cerium and absorbancy are in linear relationship. Optimum pH of the solution at the time of extraction is above 9.6. The effect of coexisting elements was examined and it was found that manganese alone exhibited a similar reaction, while tungsten, chroninum, and antimony(V) affected this reaction. The majority of the other elements was found to have comparatively small effect. This reaction was applied to the determination of cerium in thonium oxalate and lanthanum oxalate, and the results obtained are shown. (auth)
