An analysis is made of systematic errors in the measurement of electron density by microwave-cavity and Langmuir probe methods, and of the electron energy distribution function by the Langmuir probe method. The electron density and energy distribution are obtained by the probe method for pressures of 0.65 to 3.9 mm Hg and currents of 30 to 75 mA. At pressures from 0.65 to 5 mm Hg and currents from 5 to 100 mA the microwave method is used to obtain the electron density and collision frequency. The measured distribution functions are used to obtain the electron transport coefficients and the ionization frequency of molecular nitrogen in the positive column. The microwave and probe data are in good agreement with each other. (AIP)
