The equations for the electron balance and the electron-energy balance are used in conjunction with the expressions for the discharge current to calculate the ''internal'' positive-column parameters (electron temperature, electric field strength, absolute electron concentrations, distribution of electron concentration along the stream) of a discharge in a stream of helium having gas pressure papprox.100 mm Hg, flow velocity vapprox. =10$sup 4$ cm/sec, and gas temperature T/subg/=300degreeK. A formula connecting the ionization frequency with the flow velocity and the coefficient of ambipolar diffusion is obtained. The deviation of the distribution from the Maxwell and Druyvesteyn functions is taken into account, as is the step-by-step nature of ionization. The T/sube/ and n/sube/ relaxation outside the discharge region is considered. The degree of gas heating in the discharge region and the role of electron heat conduction in the electron energy balance are evaluated. (AIP)
