CONSERVATION OF $mu$$sup +$-MESON POLARIZATION IN EMULSION WITH AID OF MAGNETIC FIELD

The space-seymmetry coefficient in pi /sup +/ yields mu /sup +/ yields e/sup +/ decay is measured se a function of external magnetic field in the 0 to 17 kilogauss rangs. It is shown that this dependence can be explained by ths Paschen-Bach effect for muonium and the assumption that there is additional polarization due to charge-exchange at the end of the mu -meson path or to exchange collisions after the mu -meson has stopped. The minimum value of the asymnetry coefficient for NIKFI-R emulsions is equal to -0.09 plus or minus 0.01 (without a magnetic fisld); the maximum value is equal to -0.29 plus or minus 0.01 (in a stong field). The 10% difference between the coefficients -0.29 plus or minus 0.01 and -0.33 predicted by the V-A theory is far outside the limits of experimental errors. Among 340,000 pi /sup +/ yields mu /sup +/ yields e/sup +/ decays scanned, not a single decay is detected into three electrons corresponding to the schemes mu yields 3e or mu yields e + nu + nu - bar + gamma with the internal conversion of a gamma ray into an e/ sup +/-e/sup -/ pair.
