The results of an investigation of the aluminothermal reduction of lanthanum oxide (La/sub 2/O/sub 3/) and cerium dioxide (CeO/sub 2/) in a vacuum are presented. The reduction reaction occurs with formation of aluminum suboxide AlO and intermediate reaction products in the form of aluminates and lower oxides of rare earth metals. (auth)
