Aluminum alloys containing up to 30 to 50% rare earths were prepared by external alumino-thermoreduction of oxides. Maximum La content in alloys was 27.65% with 18.7% La yield into the alloy. The optimum yields of Ce and Pr were 32.0 and 28.0%, respectively. At high reaction rates (>1100 kcal/kg) the charge burned furiously. The optimum reaction for a charge of 0.105-nm aluminum powder was found at 850 kcal/kg for lanthanum and cerium oxides and 800 kcal/kg for praseodymium. (R.V.J.)
