CALORIMETRIC DETERMINATION OF THE ENERGY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FIRST EXCITED STATE AND THE GROUND STATE IN CERIUM MAGNESIUM NITRATE

Journal Article · · Proc. Phys. Soc. (London)
The specific heats of cerium magnesium nitrate and lanthanum magnesium nitrate were measured in the te perature range 2 to 25 deg K. These measurements show t there is an anomalous contribution to the specific heat the cerium salt of the Schottky type with its maximum 14.0 plus or minus 0.5 deg K. This corresponds to an energy splitting DELTA /k of 34 plus or minus 1.5 deg K between the first excited state and the ground state. (auth)
