The protection of water supplies from radioactive contamination is one of the most important concerns of the first Radiation Protection Ordinance of the German Federal Republic. Since comprehensive measures at the waterworks appear impracticable, they must be enforced at the places at which radioactive material is deposited. Although the obligations on those concerned are, in some sections, considered to be too stringent, the water industry holds them as absolutely necessary because of the strong legal responsibility for the supply of unexceptionable water.
