STUDIES ON RADIOACTIVE CESIUM. I. THE DISTRIBUTION AND EXCRETION OF $sup 137$Cs IN THE RAT

Two rats weighing about 100 g, 0.05 mu C of /sup 137/Cs/g body weight was injected subcutaneously. The animals were sacrificed at various intervals ranging from one to 12 days following injection and the organ radioactivities were measured with a scintillation courter. The deposition rate of /sup 137/Cs 24 hr after injection was highest in kidney, followed by muscle, spleen, liver, lung, testis, and bone in this decreasing order. Although the concentration decreased rapidly on the 2nd day in kidney, liver, and lung, it increased and reached maximum level in muscle and testis, without marked change in bone and spleen. From the 4th day, there were decreases of the concentration in all organs examined; in the muscle and testis, however, the decrease did not take place as rapidly as in the others. Even on the 12th day, the concentration in testis was nearly half the amount of the first day. The concertration in muscle maintained the highest level among all organs during the whole period of observation and did not decrease to half the amount on the first day. Urinary and fecal excretion rates of /sup 137/Cs showed a maximum on the flrst day; 12.27% of the given dose was found in the urine and 1.88% in feces. The urinary excretion rate decreased rapidly at earlier periods of the experiment, while the fecal excretion rate decreased more slowly. The total excretion for eight days was 41.26% in urine and 7.59% in feces, amounting to 48.85% in all. (BBB)
