TURNOVER OF RADIOACTIVE STRONTIUM IN NEW-BORN RATS

Journal Article · · Nature

Pregnart female rats fed /sup 45/Ca and /sup 85/Sr were divided into two groups that were given diets containing 0.5 g percent and 1.2 g per cent phosphorus. Offspring were either killed immediately at 14 days of age, or 14 days after litter exchange, whereby newborn rats were fostered by mothers being fed higher diets or vice versa. Litters born and reared by mothers on the higher phosphorus diet had greater /sup 85/Sr//sup 45/Ca ratios than the other group. When litters were exchanged at birth, the young adapted in 14 days to the /sup 85/ Sr//sup 45/Ca level appropriate to the foster mother. It was concluded that body stores of P and Ca are extremely labile in the very young. (H.M.G.)
