THE SYSTEM THORIUM-SILICON

Journal Article · · J. Inst. Metals
OSTI ID:4058488
The discovery of a low-temperature form of ThSi/sub 2/ when Th/sub 3/Si/ sub 2/ is heated in liquid bismuth let to a detailed examination of the thorium- silicon system by both metallographic and x-ray diffraction techniques. Three new phases, including beta -ThSi/sub 2/, the low-temperature hexagonal form of ThSi/sub 2/, were isolated. The other phases, alpha -Th/sub 6/Si/sub 11/ and beta -Th/sub 6/Si/sub 1/< i1>i, are respectively the high-temperature tetragonal and lowtemperature hexagonal forms of Th/sub 6/Si/sub 11/. The structural relationships between some of the phases in the system are discussed. A tentative phase diagram is included. (auth)
