LEUKEMOGENIC ACTIVITY OF CELL-FREE FILTRATES FROM RADIATION-INDUCED LEUKEMIA OF RF MICE (in Japanese)

The incidence of leukemia in RF mice exposed to a single whole-body x irradiation dose of 350 r was 41 (77.4%) out of 53 animals. Of these 41, 20 developed the thymic type and other 20 the nonthymic type of lymphocytic leukemia, while only one developed myelogenous leukemia. Cell-free filtrates from these leukemic RF mice which were exposed to a single whole-body dose of x irradiation were inoculated in newborn mice of the same strain (less than 16 hr old). Two (16.7%) of the 12 inoculated animals developed leukemia on the 357th and 374th days, respectively, after inoculation. Inoculation of the cell-free filtrates from normal mice in the newborn mice of the same strain did not produce leukemia and not one of the nonirradiated mice developed leukemia. The possible role of a virus in the induction of leukemia by x irradiation is discussed. (BBB)
