INVESTIGATIONS OF THE Al$sup 27$ (p, $gamma$)Si$sup 28$ REACTION (thesis)

The Al/sup 27/(p, gamma )Si/sup 28/ reaction at the 226-, 294-,326-, 405 and 630-kev resonances was investigated. Gamma spectra were studied with a large 5 x 6 in. NaI(Tl) crystal scintillation detector. At the 326- and 405-kev resonaces spectra were taken with a high resolution three crystal pair spectrometer, which permitted accurate energy idenitfication. Coincidence studies of the radiation served to resolve the complex cascade decay of the capture states. Double correlations (p, gamma ), (p, X, gamma ), and (p, X, X, gamma ), and triple correlations (p, gamma , gamma ), (p, X, gamma , gamma ), and (p, gamma , X, gamma ) at the 326- 405and 630-kev resonances have established the spin sequences involved in the main double and triple cascades observed. The symbol "X" denotes an unobserved intermediate radiation. Spins and parties of various levels in si/sup 28/ were determined. (auth)
