By two intravenous injections of Thorotrast (colloidal ThO/sub 2/) a marked blockade of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) was produced in adult mice and the animals then received either at once or 7 days later an intraperitoneal injection of the C/sub 1/ strain of foot-and-mouth disease virus, which is markedly pathogenic for adult mice. The blood virus titer of the Thorotrast-treated animals was increased both at the beginning and at the end of the viremia. Whether blockade of the RES produces this temporary change of the blood virus content due to inadequacy of phagocytosis could not be determined. Infection and virus multiplication in the myocardium, as judged by the frequency of myocarditis and mortality, was not influenced by Thorotrast. It is concluded that macrophages of the RES do not play a very important part as phagocytes in the viremia and myocarditis of foot-and-mouth disease. (BBB)
