Japanese) Near infrared absorption spectra of fourteen trivalent lanthanide ions in water-dixane mixture and deuterium oxide solution were studied in the range of 1.4 to 1.8 mu . Of these, praseodymium, samarium, dysprosium, erbium, and thulium have characteristic absorptions of the above ions arising from 4f-4f transition of inner electron shell as in the case visible and ultraviolet absorptions, and any change in the features of their spectra was not found, when the solvent water was replaced by oxide. The molecular extinction coefficients for the above ions were calculated, but sufficientiy accurate values could not be obtained because the bands superposed on that of water contained as crystalline water in the sample salts. It proved to be impossible to exclude water completely even by deuterium substitution. Spectrophotometric data for praseodymium, samarium, dysprosium, erbium, and thulium in deuterium oxide solution were obtained using a Cary model 14 spectrophotometer and are tabulated. All absorption maxima obeyed the Beer's law to a satisfactory degree, indicating that these absorption peaks could be used for analytical purpose as well as other purposes. (auth)
