PREDICTING BURNUP OF STAINLESS STEEL-UO$sub 2$ CERMET FUELS

The burnup of stainless steel (SS)-UO/sub 2/ cermet fuel elements is studied between 200 snd 1800 deg F. The fuel elements studied are either plates or pins, consisting of a stainless steel-UO/sub 2/ dispersion core and a bended stainless-steel outer layer. Effects of irradiation, at.% U/sup 2//sup 3//sup 5/ in dispersion, structural imperfections, and UO/sub 2/ particle growth under irradiation are outlined. In particular, techniques are described for reducing the inhomogeneity in UO/sub 2/ loading, which is encountered in rolled fuel plates. (T.F.H.)
