Utility`s orbital welding self performance repair program

Consolidated Edison Company of New York operates eight different power plants in the five boroughs of New York City. These are primarily fossil fuel plants, but they also operate the Indian Point Nuclear Facility in Westchester County. In 1991, Consolidated Edison began a program to update their welding operations which included the use of computerized orbital pipe welding equipment. Con Edison`s Maintenance and Construction Department is responsible for maintenance at all of their plants, so improvements in welding operations affect the entire company. The orbital welding equipment was originally purchased for the 1991-1992 outage of the Astoria 50 boiler in Queens, N.Y. Rather than hire an outside contractor, Con Edison made the decision to make the investment in capital equipment and to train their personnel to both operate the welding equipment and to perform routine maintenance on the equipment. This investment of capital was part of a well-though-out plan to save money on that job as well as on future outages. Part of this plan involved the use of machine welding to improve weld quality and productivity. Improved weld quality would result in better welds, reduce the frequency of future repairs, and extend the operating life of the boiler.
