S>The quadrupolar deformation of heavy nuclei was studied experimentally. The theoretical aspects of deformation of nuclei and probability of gamma transition, together with angnlar correlations and internal conversion, are discussed. The methods used for the analysis of alpha , BETA , and gamma radiation and for the measurement of the mean lifetime of excited states are described. The mean lifetimes of the 2+ and 4+ levels of Ra/sup 226/ 2+ level of Ra/sup 224/ and 2+ level of Rn/sup 224/ were measured. The results show that the lifetimes and the attenuation of the alpha - gamma angular correlations are explained by the Bohr-Mottelson theory of rotational levels conjugated with the Abragam-Pound theory of angular correlation perturbations. The parameters of quadrupolar deformation were deduced for U/sup 234/, Ra/sup 226/ , Ra/sup 224/, Rn/sup 222/, and Rn/sup 220/. The transitions between the deformed nuclei and the spherical nuclei of lower mass are not as slow as had been assumed. The character of the transition between spherical nuclei and deformed nuclei was shown to be true for Ra/sup 223/. The electric quadrupole moment of the first level, the mean lifetime of the 286-kev level, and the probabilities of partial emission of the 236-kev gamma radiation are given for this nucleus. Definitive conclusions could not be obtained on the quadrupolar deformation of Ac/sup 227/ and Pa/sup 234/. The probabilities of gamma transition (M/sub 2/) and the internal conversion coefficients (M/sub 1/) are discussed. (J.S.R.)
