DOSIMETRIC ASPECTS OF RADIUM POISONING. Annual Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4757402
Progress is reported in studies of the skeletal radiation dose received by workers who engaged in painting dials with radium paints. The long-range objective is the corre1ation of data on dosage with pathological changes in the skeleton. Radiochemica1 separation procedures applicable to complex mixtures of Ra/sup 228/, Ra /sup 226/, and Ra/sup 224/ were developed. A large number of paint samples were analyzed for Ra/sup 226/ and Ra/sup 228/ by gamma-ray spectroscopy. Equipment was built and calibrated for use in determinations of Rn in breath, air, and aqueous solutions. The equipment was used for the determination of Ra/sup 226/ and breath Rn of 5 dial painters. Results of whole- body measurements for Ra/sup 226/ and Ra/sup 228/ in the same individuals gave results in reasonable agreement with the Rn breath measurements. Data are tabulated. Procedures were developed for the radiochemical analysis of Ra in bone tissue, and analysis of breath thoron as a possible means of determining the body burden of Ra/sup 228/. (C.H.)
