A study was made on the direct light radiation of alkenes which result in positional migration of the double bond with a preference to migrate into a five membered ring where present. Deuterium isotope effect studies indicated intramolecular migration; and it was proposed that the migration was possibly due to emergence of $pi$,sigma* state as the lowest lying singlet excited state.
