The E2986 thyratron, a commercially produced switch tube with a capacity of 200 megawatts-peak, a mean power level of 150 kilowatts, a 40 kilovolt hold- off voltage, and a peak current rating of 10,000 amp, is described. The deuterium-filled thyratron is now being used in connection with the 50-Mev Proton Linear Accelerator at Harwell. The thyratron is compared with the ignitron. Operating characteristics of the thyratron are described. (R.E.U.)
