Doses of 5 mC /sup 198/Au in either the colloidal form or adsorbed on carbon particles 20 to 40 mu in dia were administered to 10 dogs by the lingual artery with and without ligature of the homolateral vein. Blood samples were taken 1, 15, and 30 min after injection from the homolateral, contralateral, and femoral veins. After 24 hr the animals were sacrificed, the tounges removed, a portion of the liver removed, and a final blood sample taken from the general circulation. With colloidal Au without ligature of the vein, no fixation of radioactivity was noted in the tongue by scintigraphy; however, activity of blood samples from the contralateral lingual and femoral veins indicated considerable distribution of Au after 1 min. Similar results were obtained with colloidal Au with ligature of the effluent vein; in both cases there was rapid, massive fixation of activity in the liver to an approximately equal extent. When Au adsorbed on C particles was injected without ligature of the vein, the blood samples taken from the contralateral lingual and femoral veins had only 20 to 25% of the activity of that from the homolateral vein. Injection of absorbed Au with ligature of the homolateral vein resulted in almost complete localization in the tongue, concentrated at the tip and basal part. Blood samples and activity of the liver also indicated considerable fixation. Tables, autoradiograms, and photomicrographs of histological sections are presented. The fourth method has evident clinical application for irradiation of tumors of the tongue. (BBB)
