The possible accuracy of ion cyclotron resonance spectrographic equipment as a tool to study isotopic substitution effects on equilibrium processes involving ions in the gas phase was explored. The equilibria involving isotopic exchange of light and heavy isotopes of N2 and O2 molecules were studied. Because of error in measurement of the pressure ratios of the neutral molecules, the ion cyclotron resonance technique was determined to be inadequate for the study of these systems. However, since the isotopic effects of hydrogen-deuterium substitution are larger, the ion cyclotron resonance techniques might provide useful information in that system.
