STUDIES OF THE INTESTINAL ABSORPTION OF $sup 59$Fe IN PATIENTS IRRADIATED IN THE ABDOMINO-PELVIC REGION (in Italian)
In continuing research on the functional changes of the small intestine during therapeutic irradiation, the intestinal absorption of the /sup 59/Fe and 18 patients irradiated on the abdomino-pelvic region was studied. In order to evalunte the avidity of the tissues for the metal the plasmatic T1/2 of a dose of /sup 59/Fe injected endovenously was simultaneously determined in these patients. The statistical elaboration of the results obtained permitted definition of a mean behaviour characterized by a decrease of the intestinal absorption and by a lengihening of the T1/2 of the /sup 59/Fe in the middle of the cycle of treatment, as well as by an increase of the absorption and an abbreviation of the T1/2 at the end of it. It was concluded that these results may be due either to an alteration of the intestinal wall which would decrease in the second part of the treatment, or to changes of the erythropoietic activity during the irradiation.
