A fuel handling machine for gas-cooled reactors is designed which overcomes the operating difficulties of rotatable magazines. The machine comprises a magazine, a handling unit, means on the unit for locking the magazine in a fixed predetermined position, prehensile means on the unit engageable with the fuel elements, and means for displacing the prehensile means relative to the locked magazine. The machine is to be used in conjunction with an apparatus described in British Patent 953,298. (D.L.C.)
