Solid fertle material of cylindnical or other suitable shape is covered by a layer containing fissile material, whidch in its turn is enclosed or bounded by an immediately adjacent container wall, acting as a heat transfer surface for the element. The fertle material consists of U/sup 238/ or Ni, Sq Ti or Zr. Aes fissle material U/sup 235/ is initially used and later on Pu/sup 239/ or U/sup 233/. The volume of the "fissile layer comprises 1 to 40 vol.% (generally 20%) of the total volume of the fuel element, not counting that of the container. This construction can be adapted to rod-shaped, tube- or plate-type fuel elements. (NPO)
