The major objectives of the AEC biomedical research program are to overcome the biological hazards of atomic energy and to pioneer the useful potentialities of radiation in the life sciences. Supporting objectives are: 1. To increase basic knowledge of biological mechanisms and effects of radiation on biological systems; 2. To utilize this knowledge in solving the practical health and safety problems and in evaluating the biological consequences for man of all atomic energy programs and devices; 3. To promote the application of special nuclear and radioactive materials, and accelerator radiations, in medicine, biology and agriculture, and for diagnosis and treatment of cancer. To accomplish these objectives, the program fosters research in: 1. Scientific areas which: (1) involve problems of importance in the life sciences and which may be subject to resolution through the use of radiations and by-product materials; (2) underlie better understanding of the principles, mechanisms and implications of the interactions of radiations with biological systems; and (3) provide data to extend and refine the existing scientific guidance for the control of exposure to radiation; 2. Specialized applications to problems of health and safety in atomic energy operations; 3. Beneficial applications of special nuclear and radioactive materials and accelerator radiations to practical medical, biological, agricultural and food-processing problems.
