The ultimate goal of the Biological, Medical, and Environmental Research Program is to provide a body of scientific information which can be used to evaluate the possible hazardous effects of nuclear developments on man and his environment. The research emphasis is expected to be responsive to the changing needs of a rapidly developing energy program to ensure that the various activities are pursued with due regard to the health and safety not only of the workers directly, but also large segments of the human population and the natural systems that make up their environment. Several broad research areas and their specific objectives are: 1. In the area of interaction of radiation with biological systems: a. To formulate general principles of radiation effects on living organisms including man; b. To understand the cellular, subcellular and molecular basis of radiation damage and its repair. 2. In the area of assessment, evaluation, and control of radiation exposure to man and his environment: a. To understand the various routes by which potentially hazardous radioelements can affect man or his environment; b. To develop means for monitoring as well as improving the safe operations of nuclear energy programs. 3. In the area of beneficial applications of radionuclides and radiation: a. To discover and promote beneficial uses of special radioactive materials or accelerator radiation for medical, biological or agricultural research; b. To establish safety and wholesomeness of foods preserved by irradiation. In the following pages, the individual projects of the Program are presented, by category, in the form of summaries furnished by the investigators to Science Information Exchange of the Smithsonian Institution.
