CORROSION INVESTIGATION OF INOR-8 DURING DISSOLUTION OF ZrO$sub 2$ WITH HF

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4045433
Experiments were made to determine the durability of INOR-8, Hasteiloy N, and two types of welds under hydrofluorination conditions in molten LiF-NaF at 700 deg C while ZrO/sub 2/ is being dissolved. ZrO/sub 2/ is readily dissolved in fluorides with HF at rates varying from 1 to 6 mg/cm/sup 2//hr. Corrosion of INOR-8 was severe, especiaily at the interface. The data indicate that areas near the sparging gas, interface, and crevices can be expected to corrode rapidly at rates up to 100 mils/month. The nature of INOR-8 corrosion is similar to that of Hasteiloy N. No selective attach was observed in the welds. No effect of ZrO/ sub 2/ dissolution on the corrosion was observed. (D.L.C.)
