EFFECT OF THYROIDECTOMY ON THE RESISTANCE OF RATS TO IRRADIATION (in Russian)
Male white rats weighing 150 to 200 g were totally thyroidectomized; the parathyroids were also removed since most adult white rats have auxiliary ones. Two weeks later their temperatures averaged 1.4 deg C below normal and most had 16% lower blood erythrocyte levels and also lower leukocyte levels. A month after the operation 30 of the thyroidectomized rats, plus 25 controls, were irradiated with a single dose of 600 r; two weeks after the operation 10 operated and 10 controls were irradiated with 300 r. In the 600-r group, of the animals dying the first week the weight of the experimental group had decreased 20% by the seventh day, compared with 15% in the controls. After two weeks differences in weight were not significant. The blood leukocyte levels in the experimental group did not differ significantly from those in the control group on the seventh day, though they were a little higher earlier. The life span of the experimental group was generally shorter, and the totai deaths (20 days) somewhat higher than in the controls. Fatty degeneration of the liver on the seventh day to the eighth day was less than in the controls. For the 300-r group, after one week the weights of the experimental and control animals had decreased 7%, but after five weeks the experimental animals were normal and the controls 20% lower. As in the 600-r group, the development of leukopenia did not differ much in the experimental and control animals. Recovery of erythrocyte levels was slower in the experimental than in the control group. (TTT)
