The reversing near flow of a cylinder in planar harmonic flow at Keulegan Carpenter numbers in the drag-inertia dominated flow regime and at subcritical Reynolds numbers is investigated. LDV measurements of streamwise and cross-stream velocities near the cylinder and streamwise velocities at the far flow field are taken and recorded simultaneously. Visualization of the flow around the cylinder is performed by seeding the flow with small wax particles which scatter light when moving through a laser light sheet. Velocity data are reduced via mode phase averaging to average velocity cycles representing the positive and negative flow modes--dominant vortex shedding and convecting from the top and the bottom of the cylinder, respectively. Flow mapping, based on the mode phase averages of measured velocity data, captures the basic features of the vortex patterns that have been identified by flow visualization.
