The time dependent flow in the vicinity of a cylinder in planar reversing farfield flow at Keulegan-Carpenter numbers in the drag-inertia dominated flow regime, was investigated both experimentally and numerically. LDV measurements of the streamwise and cross-stream velocities were taken around the cylinder and were subsequently reduced using mode phase averaging to capture the periodic components of the flow. An algorithm was developed for the numerical simulation of the flow, based on a finite-element method for the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in two dimensions. The momentum equations were combined with a pressure correction equation and were solved employing a non-staggered grid. The solution was advanced in time with an explicit/implicit marching scheme. Flow mappings based on phase averages of measured velocity data compare well with the numerically simulated ones.
