Impairment of Erythropoiesis by Irradiation

Investigations indicated that erythropoietin induces erythrocyte production by stimulating differentiation of primitive cells of the reticulum. An orderly wave of erythropoiesis was observed to sweep through the reticulum of mice with transfusion-induced polycythemia in response ot a single injection of erythropoietin. Whole-body x irradiation caused reduction in the incorporation of Fe59 in the red cells of polycythemic mice given a single injection of erythropoietin. (C.H.)
