Measurement of the {gamma}+{ital D}{asterisk}{sup {plus_minus}} Cross Section in {ital {bar p}p} Collisions at {radical}{ital s}=1.8 TeV
We have measured the cross section of {gamma}+{ital D}{asterisk}{sup {plus_minus}} production in {ital {bar p}}{ital p} collisions at {radical}{ital s}=1.8 TeV using the Collider Detector at Fermilab. In this kinematic region, the Compton scattering process ({ital g}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{gamma}{ital c}) is expected to dominate and thus provide a direct link to the charm quark density in the proton. From the 45{plus_minus}18 {gamma}+{ital D}{asterisk}{sup {plus_minus}} candidates in a 16.4 pb{sup {minus}1} data sample, we have determined the production cross section to be 0.38{plus_minus}0.15(stat){plus_minus}0.11(syst) nb for the rapidity range {vert_bar}{ital y}({ital D}{asterisk}{sup {plus_minus}}){vert_bar}{lt}1.2 and {vert_bar}{ital y}({gamma}){vert_bar}{lt}0.9, and for the transverse momentum range {ital p}{sub {ital T}}({ital D}{asterisk}{sup {plus_minus}}){gt}6 GeV/{ital c} and 16{lt}{ital p}{sub {ital T}}({gamma}){lt}40 GeV/{ital c}.
