Iodine-131 and Strontium-90 in Man

Results of the U. S. Public Health Service program for surveying the levels of fallout radionuclides in milk are presented. In 1957, a Milk Sampling Network was established to sample milk from five milksheds. This network was expanded to 12 stations by 1959, and it is now composed of more than 60 stations set up to measure the radioactivity content of milk consumed by approximates 60 million Americans. Milk samples are analyzed quartitatively at the Division of Radiological Health Regional Laboratories in Winchester (Mass.), Montgomery (Ala.), and Las Vegas (Nev.) for those nuclides of largest potential health importance, including /sup 131/I, /sup 137/Cs, /sup 140/Ba, /sup 89/Sr, and / su p 90/Sr. Data on cortributions of various sources of intake of /sup 90/Sr suggest that milk can serve as a useful indicator of the levels of total daily intake of this element. Data support the conclusion that fresh milk was the only significant source of radiation exposure to the thyroid gland of the population during the period of Soviet tests in the fall of 1961. Results of the /sup 131/I analysis from the Milk Sampling Network for the 12 months, September 1, 1961, to August 31, 1962, are tabulated. The thyroid dose was then calculated on the basis of an annual average daily intake of 80 mu mu C of /sup 131/I resulting in a dose of 500 millirem/yr to infarts in which the thyroid wt is 2 g. The average annual dose to the thyroid from radioiodine for the 12 months, September 1, 1961, through August 31, 1962, was thus calculated to be 220 millirem. (BBB)
