To develop a method suitable for the separation and detection of radionuclides having a half-life of about 10 to 20 min, the separation of 14.9 hr Na/sup 24/ from 9.6 min Mg/sup 27/ was studied. The radioisotopes were produced by the nuclear reactions Al/sup 27/(n, alpha )Na/sup 24/ and Al/sup 27/(n,p)Mg/ sup 27/. usi ng 14 Mev neutrons from a tritium target bombarded with deuterons from a 400-kev Cockcroft and Walton accelerator. Since the separation procedure must operate in the presence of relatively large amounts of aluminum from dissolution of the irradiated target, the procedure was based on the inability of the resin to retain sodium and on the different stabilities of the EDTA complexes of magnesium and aluminum. At pH 7.5 to 8 both chelates ars retained by the resin, but since the aluminum chelate remnins sthble over a wide pH range (3 to 10) while the magnesium chelate is less atable at the lower pH, the latter can be eluted from the resin with 1 N acptic acid.
