IODINE-125 PRODUCTION

Journal Article · · Isotopes Radiation Technol.
OSTI ID:4038992

The preparation of /sup 125/I and its fabrication into radiographic sources are reviewed. A number of batch production runs for preparation of / sup 125/I by irradiation of /sup 124/Xe were made with targets of natural xenon under pressure. Unit full-recovery cost of 2-C batches containing < 15% /sup 126/ I was approximates 00 per mC. It was estimated that increased pressure and container size could reduce the cost to < 10 per mC, and, with a circulating pressurized loop and enriched /sup 24/Xe the cost could be further reduced to < 50 per mC. /sup 125/I may also be produced in the cyclotron by the nuclear reactions /sup 125/Te(p,n)/sup 125/I, /sup 125/Te(d n)/sup 125/I, and /sup 125/T e(d 2n)/sup 125/I The product, however, is very expensive and highly contaminated with other iodine isotopes.
