The history of the evolution of ceramic products is discussed, and the rapid development of ceramic products and their use in various branches of ferrous metallurgy, electrotechniques, electronics, nuclear energy and astronautics are reviewed. Topics discussed are: dielectric ceramic, insulating, and piezoelectric products, and ferrites; pure oxide refractory products obtained by sintering; carbides, nitrides, silicides, and borides; sulfides and fluorides; graphites; and cermets, whiskers, composite materials, and ceramic linings on a plasma torch support. The consequences of irradiation of ceramic products are mentioned. 200 references are included. (P.C.H.)
