Proton radiography for medical application

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4037596

A proton beam attenuates very rapidly at the end of its range. This property makes such a beam a very sensitive probe of small density variations in human tissue. A team from the Zero Gradient Synchrotron at the Argonne National Laboratory and from the University of Chicago Medical School is working on the development of proton radiography as a practical diagnostic tool. This work includes development of a suitable electronic beam detector and a suitable accelerator.
