Remote effects on N. tabacum and N. rustica plants raised from seeds irradiated with 0.5 to 80 kr gamma doses were studied. A strong radioinduced depression in the development of Nicotiana plants was observed with 40-kr doses at an early stage of germination and with 5 kr at later stages. Irradiation of seed with 0.5- to 1-kr doses resulted in negligible increases of dry substance in 10-day sprouts. An increase of 25% in the dry weight harvest of N. rustica was observed following gamma irradiation of seeds to 1-kr doses. Irradiation of Nicotiana seeds with 0.5- to 1-kr doses resulted in an approximates 4 to 30% increase of nicotine content in comparison with controls. (R.V.J.)
