Is your organization meeting designated environmental goals? To answer this question, many operating companies are using management systems to define, develop and carry out environmental compliance. One benchmark method that can evaluate a facility`s environmental condition is an environmental compliance audit (ECA). This management system communicates the organization`s environmental objectives and declares performance goals. These audits also show if the facility is meeting its goals and where improvements are needed. Regulatory agencies encourage conducting ECAs. However, these audits are not applicable to all. Before charging into an audit program, management should thoroughly investigate if compliance auditing will be beneficial to the particular plant. Operating facilities are unique due to location and processing schemes. Consequently, even within the same organization there are differences between similar processing facilities. Using the nine-point guideline, management can quickly evaluate if an ECA will produce cost-effective benefits.
