Commercial radioisotope measurement systems, developed for use in many applications, such as bulk density, liquid density, thickness of sheets, and firmness of cigarettes, are described. The basic principles of these instrumerts are reviewed. The following developments in the use of gamma backscatter gages are described: a gage for measuring the thickness of heat-exchanger tubing by inserting a probe in the inside of the pipe; a modification of a commercial coal density gage to give it a more linear response and to make it less sensitive to the composition of the coal; and the detection of defects in logs by gamma backscattering. A double-beam gamma density gage was developed for use in a mass flowmeter. Gages for measurement of density of silage and of the atmosphere from 45,000 to 150,000 ft are also described. (M.C.G.)
