Title: MERCHANT MARINE SHIP REACTOR

Abstract

A nuclear reactor is described for use in a merchant marine ship. The reactor is of pressurized light water cooled and moderated design in which three passes of the water through the core in successive regions of low, intermediate, and high heat generation and downflow in a fuel region are made. The foregoing design makes a compact reactor construction with extended core life. The core has an egg-crate lattice containing the fuel elements confined between a lower flow baffle and upper grid plate, with the latter serving also as part of a turn- around manifold from which the entire coolant is distributed into the outer fuel elements for the second pass through the core. The inner fuel elements are cooled in the third pass.

The reactor is of compact construction by virtue of a novel multi-pass core design, and its reactivity lifetime is conservatively estimated at 52,275 Mwd or 3,33 calendar years of operation without fueling, the fuel elements are square in cross section and are confined within an egg-crate type lattice.   • A nuclear reactor for the propulsion of merchant marine ships is described that comprises a sealed pressure vessel having a top closure and enclosing an active core of a group of vertical fuel assemblies. Each of these assemblies has longitudinal passages to permit a flow of the light water moderator. First and second baffle assemblies are arranged opposite the top and bottom ends respectively of the core. The first baffle assembly includes means for directing the moderator fluid into the longitudinal passages of an outer portion of the fuel assemblies, forming in this manner a downward second pass of themore » fluid through the reactor. The second baffle assembly includes means for directing outgoing moderator fluid from the outer portion of the fuel assemblies into the remaining inner portion of the fuel assemblies and the spaces in between, forming in this manner an upward third pass of the fluid through the reactor.
